1. Simple Practical Formula (Home Use)

Step 1 – Basic Calculation (Rough Estimate for Residential)

Suitable for living room, bedroom, hallway, dining room
Typical coverage (2.7–2.8m ceiling height, standard 60° beam LED downlight):
  • 5W LED downlight: 4–5 m² / light (bedroom, soft ambient)
  • 7W LED downlight: 5–6 m² / light (living room)
  • 9W LED downlight: 6–7 m² / light (bright living / kitchen)
  • 12W LED downlight: 7–9 m² / light (open area, high ceiling)

Example

Room: 4m × 5m = 20 m²

Choose 7W downlights (5.5 m² each)

20 ÷ 5.5 ≈ 4 units

2. Professional Lighting Formula (Accurate Lux Calculation)

Standard Values

  1. Target Lux (residential)
  • Bedroom: 80–120 lux
  • Living room: 120–180 lux
  • Kitchen: 200–300 lux
  • Dining area: 150–220 lux
  • Hallway: 80–100 lux
  1. Factors
  • Utilisation Factor (UF) = 0.6–0.75 (white ceiling/wall = higher)
  • Maintenance Factor (MF) = 0.7–0.8 (dust aging loss)

Example Calculation

Living room: 4m × 5m = 20m² | Target lux = 150

7W downlight = 600 lumens each

UF=0.7, MF=0.75
Total Lumens = 20 × 150 ÷ 0.7 ÷ 0.75

= 3000 ÷ 0.525 ≈ 5714 lumens

Quantity = 5714 ÷ 600 ≈ 10 units
Note: This is full ambient lighting; many homes mix downlights + main ceiling light so fewer downlights are used.

3. Spacing Guidelines (Critical to Avoid Dark Spots)

Ceiling height H = 2.6–2.8m
  • 60° beam angle: Max spacing = 1.5 × ceiling height
  • 90° wide beam: Max spacing = 2.0 × ceiling height
Never space further than this, otherwise dark patches appear.

Important Adjustment 1: Maintenance Factor (Real-World Usable Light)

The rated lumens are the factory-new maximum output. Over time, LEDs dim and dust builds up.

Effective usable lumens = Total Lumens × Maintenance Factor (MF)

Typical MF values for indoor downlights:
  • Clean ceiling, regular maintenance: 0.75 – 0.80
  • Kitchen / dusty area: 0.65 – 0.70
Example continuing above:

Effective lumens = 3900 × 0.75 = 2,925 lm

Important Adjustment 2: Mixed Downlight Models

If you use different wattages/lumen outputs:

Total Lumens = (Qty₁ × Lm₁) + (Qty₂ × Lm₂) + (Qty₃ × Lm₃)
Example:

= 2400 + 2400

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1.  Do NOT add watts together to judge brightness

    Two 7W lights ≠ same brightness as one 14W light (different lumen efficiency)
  2.  Ignore beam angle — total lumens tells you total light energy, not light spread

    Narrow beam (36°) concentrates light; wide beam (90°) spreads light evenly. Same total lumens can create different room brightness.
  3.  Confuse lumens (total light) with lux (light hitting the floor).
    • Lumens = total light produced by all LEDs
    • Lux = brightness on your room surface (depends on ceiling height, room size, reflectivity)
